Welcome to a new, and rare update! I apologize for the delay in updating our blog!
So many great things are happening in room 134! Our community has really grown! Our readers, writers and mathematicians are learning so much every day!
But first, let's take a look back!
Back in November, we had a great friendship soup day! We had a great turn out of kids and parents!
Then we had a really fun gingerbread house event in December! Everyone got in on the action, including the babies!
Right before the winter break, we had our "Polar Express" day and a great holiday assembly! We spent a great day in our pajamas!
That brings us into the new year!
We hit the new year with guided reading groups and our full readers workshop! The children journal, read, read on iPads, do word work on iPads, read with each other and read with the teacher in a 1 hour period. They get a 15 minute recess break, then they are back in the classroom writing in their word work journals. They have learned 16 new sight words! We make sentences with all of the words we know, plus words we can stretch out to hear the sounds!
The children spend 45 minutes a day writing books! We have learned how to write full books! We don't just draw pictures anymore. Their stamina has rocketed since the new year! I am very proud of what they are accomplishing!
In our reading focus lesson, we are thinking about our thinking! We call it metacognition. We spent some time thinking about our schema, which is all of the things that are in our brains! We use that information to make text to self connections when we read. Since the new year we have been using our schema to make mental images when we read. The teacher reads books without showing pictures. Then we draw the pictures that we make in our brains! We learned how our schema changes our mental images! That is why everyone's mental images look different.
In math we are focusing on learning the teen numbers! We are starting with 10 and adding "more" to make the teen numbers.
Here are some important upcoming dates:
January 30th - No School
February 13th and 16th - No School
February 19th and 20th - Early release for conferences. I am going to be scheduling conferences during that entire week. I would like to meet with every family.
Reminders:
Check your child's backpack everyday for important information! Red folders come home most Fridays, but sometimes there is information that needs to come home mid-week.
Finally, please return red folders on Monday every week!
